The City of Melbourne is a leading capital city local government authority. Our vision is to be a bold, inspirational and sustainable city. As part of this we aim to care for the environment, while preparing responsibility for the future growth. Fitzroy Gardens Redevelopment demonstrates how a series of strategic manoeuvres can achieve a great public realm outcome for the city. By redesigning an existing a publically inaccessible maintenance depot of 9000m² to half its size, a parcel of land became available for a variety of new public uses. This has resulted in significant outcomes for the City of Melbourne’s increasing residential population and visitor numbers. The design included a water feature and play space that recreate a natural water course, while also collecting stormwater for filtering and recycling through a new 5 megalitre underground tank system – the largest in the City of Melbourne. This infrastructure provides a reliable alternative clean water source for ongoing irrigation of the heritage Gardens, while parkland above provides a new space for our gorwing numbers of residents and visitors alike to enjoy.
