A Banksia Award is the seal of environmental excellence.
More than one award to enter
The Banksia Category Awards comprise ten separate Awards and the entry kit provides you with the technical information and criteria for all of the ten awards.
Subject to individual award eligibility, entrants for these Awards can be individuals, groups, communities, governments and corporations etc.
Your project and its different strengths can be eligible for more than one award e.g.
- A building company submits a building project into the Built Environment Award
- A process from that building project, which involves significant innovation is entered into the Eco Innovation Award
- The company behind the project has implemented impressive sustainability practices into their business and enter into the Business Sustainability Awards – etc.
There are many ways to identify which award to enter. If you need some assistance in choosing the award/s best suited to your specific initiative, contact Banksia.
To enter a category award you will need to pay a fee and these are calculated according to your status i.e. community, large business etc. The Award Entry Kit is downloadable from this page and contains all the technical specifications for each Category Award together with key instructions in how to complete a Banksia Entry.

General Eligibility
Your initiative must have recent significance, with results shown over the last two years. The initiative must be primarily undertaken in Australia, or must be shown to have a substantial environmental impact in Australia. The organisation or individual must not have been prosecuted for a violation of any environmental, social or commercial law in Australia or overseas in the past 12 months.
Refer to Category Award Entry Kit for any extra eligibility requirements.
How to enter the Awards
To enter an Award in the 2010 Banksia Environmental Awards Program you need to do the following
1. Decide which Award to enter -
a. review the 2010 Banksia Category Awards summary (please note there are new category awards in 2010). b. make sure that you are eligible (see general eligibility) c. don't forget to check the other awards such as the Prime Minister' Environmentalist of the Year Award (separate entry required), the Environment Minister's Young Environmentalist of the Year Award (separate entry required) or the Mercedes-Benz Australian Environmental Research Award (separate entry required). d. remember you can enter more than one category (separate entries are required for each submission)
2. Download an Entry Kit
a. the Award Entry Kit should provide you with all the information you require such as: - submission requirements including entry format and supporting documentation; - category criteria and - entry form. b. You will need to register your information with us when you download any Award Entry Kits. It is important to register for our email newsletter also as this is our method of communicating with you during the Award period to advise of any changes, deadlines or other important information. (Please note all categories are included in the one entry kit)
3. Check the Banksia Category Award entry fees.
4. Make sure you are familiar with the Award timelines.
5. Attend the free Banksia Award Entry Information Sessions which are run nationally in May 2010.
a. the sessions are designed to assist you with preparing your entry providing useful tips. b. it is a useful forum to get questions answered.

More Banksia Awards
There are two other awards that stem from the finalists and winners of the ten Category Awards. ORIGIN GOLD BANKSIA AWARD, the BANKSIA COMMUNITY GRANT and the PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD
Winning the Origin Gold Banksia Award
From the winners of our ten category awards (see above) there is one more important selection made and that is the Origin Gold Banksia Award winner (supported by Origin). The selection process is done separately from the category judging and the criteria for this award is that the winner must have made a contribution worthy of extra recognition and acknowledgement.

Winning the Banksia Community Grant
All community group entrants into the Banksia category awards are automatically eligible for consideration for the Banksia Community Grant (supported by the GPT Group). In addition to being judged against other entrants through the regular category award judging process, community group entries are judged separately by a community grant judging panel who select the winner of the grant.

Being Selected as a contender for the Banksia People's Choice Award
From the finalists of our ten category awards, nine finalists are selected to be entered into the Banksia People's Choice Award (supported by Australia Post). These nine contenders are publicised on the Banksia People's Choice website (www.peopleschoice.com.au) and open to voting from the general public. During the voting period, you can go to the website and read what each finalist is about and actually have the privilege to vote for the entry you believe deserves the Banksia People's Choice Award.
