Protecting Little Penguins on the Summerland Peninsula- Phillip Island, VIC
The protection of Little Penguins on the Summerland Peninsula is an extraordinary success story of one of the longest running seabird research programs in Australia coupled with wise management and ecotourism practices.
The project led to the formation of Phillip Island Nature Park to ensure consistant coastal management across Phillip Island. The Park developed a Management Plan, in consultation with community and stakeholders.
Implementation of the Plan ensures ongoing understanding and protection of little penguins and their habitat as well as the conservation of other marine and coastal species including Short-tailed Shearwaters, Hooded Plovers, Crested Terns and Australian Fur Seals as well as rare coastal plant species.
