35th National Banksia Sustainability Award finalists showcase new frontiers in sustainability

From reducing loved pets’ carbon paw print to developing a virtual powerplant, the finalists announced today for the 35th National Banksia Sustainability Awards demonstrate the full scope and talent of environmental and social impact projects in Australia.

Revealing the short list, Banksia Foundation CEO Graz van Egmond praised finalists for their commitment to sustainability and social impact, and for the wide range of entries.

“Across the categories this year, we have seen an incredible diversity of entries and finalists, from sole traders to large enterprises, all thinking and working creatively and effectively to combat climate change and inequity.”

“At a time when innovative solutions are desperately needed to ensure a climate resilient world, it is a joy to be able to celebrate even more Australian organisations who are contributing to building a more sustainable and equitable future for all.” Ms van Egmond said.

This year’s Awards have seen the introduction of two new categories; the Climate Impact Technology Award and the Nature Positive Award.

“The Climate Impact Technology category has received some of the most exciting entries we’ve seen thus far, with new frontiers in sustainability being developed before our eyes” says Ms van Egmond. “It truly showcases the innovation and excellence that the Banksia Foundation strives to celebrate year on year.”

Finalists from this year’s Awards include:

  • A platform dubbed the ‘Uber of charity goods donations’ cutting down on waste by connecting charities and businesses
  • A smart irrigation system using AI to cool public green spaces
  • A program creating pathways for the future generation of Aboriginal rangers and traditional custodians.
  • A permanent housing solution for people experiencing homelessness

A full list of finalists is available to view on the Banksia Foundation website.
